ZEVS, a French based street artists has made his mark as the man who makes the logos of big brands bleed. His term is “visual kidnapping”. The term refers to stealing a brand’s effectiveness by visually altering the meaning of the brand in the public realm. I urge you to read the interview I’ve included, but I think that if I were give cart blanche to overthrow a brand identity such as MacDonald’s I would not just have paint streaming down the sides of the sign. My big idea: create a series of stickers of little yellow men in silhouette that get progressively fatter as they get nearer to the bottom. OK. That’s probably an overdone idea. Next!

JooYoun Paek may be one of the most innovative designers I’ve seen in a long time. Her project range from the practicle to the insane. But the thread that ties her projects together is each product solves very practical problems in garishly bold ways.

There are so many ingenious products that this woman has made, but I’ve chosen just one and I leave you to explore the rest. My favorite of the group is the pillowig. It’s more of a pillow hat. (I think the term Pillowig was chosen because the words merge easily together, but pillowhat adds a third dimension, i.e. pillo-what?)

I chose to feature this design because I’ve got a six month old son who tries very hard to sit up and then flops his head back accidentaly pounding his skull on the floor which inevitably leads to screaming. That’s just what kids do. If he only had a pillowig there woulld be one less worry for me. Yes, he may look funny, but at his age I’m thinking he won’t care.

The graphic nature of each plate is pervaded by a street sensabilty and color punch you in the face feeling. As much as I’m dying to have these plates on my own table, I’m holding off until the dollar recovers because at 53 Euros per plate (which is what? about $4000?) I could only see myself getting nervous any time my son crawls within ten feet. If only I had a china cabinet.
