Let’s face it, we all want to make an extra buck. But it makes it so much more simple for me to sell goods when the goods are just so… good. Today, I’m exploring feelmorehuman.com’s collection of Vessel’s Architectural Pottery re-issues from San Diego. The pieces are a higher plane of lovely. Most ceramic vessels in their collection come in ultra-simple white. But color is occasionally added such as in the WS-4 pieces. If you are looking for a gift for the zen modernist gardener in your life then look no further.

Alright. I’ve fallen for it. The Swiss Army brand has moved into shoes and I’m in. The shoes, lead by Established Brands, have been expertly produced with the expected simplicity, ease of use, and signature red color that is important to give it that Swiss Army feel. I grew up owning a Swiss Army knife, and I never thought much of it except that it was just so damn cool. And it’s this sort of child like deep mental bond that pulls me in to the lust for these shoes. What makes these shoes cool if you took the logo off? Well, their still light weight, well made, rugged, and thoughtfully designed, but quite frankly, if they had a Payless logo on them then I wouldn’t be writing about them.

Mixko, as their namesake indicates, is a company that mixes multiple unlike things together to come up with completely new meanings. They look at an object like a whistle, for instance, and say, “Hey, if the scale of that whistle were multiplied in size by, like four hundred times, then that whistle would make a mighty comfortable lounge chair.” Of course, their mixing does not stop there. They mix cartoon bubbles with plates, candles with joysticks, and my personal favorite: dog shit with jewelry. The one item informs the other in such refreshing and revealing ways. But the thing that makes Mixko extra special is that they are so young yet so prolific as to beg the question: what will Mixko be in thirty years when the design mashup matures? My answer is that Mixko may rule the earth at that point.

The graphic nature of each plate is pervaded by a street sensabilty and color punch you in the face feeling. As much as I’m dying to have these plates on my own table, I’m holding off until the dollar recovers because at 53 Euros per plate (which is what? about $4000?) I could only see myself getting nervous any time my son crawls within ten feet. If only I had a china cabinet.

Jason Miller, one of the hottest American designers of the past five years, has created what may be seen as a continuation on his playful lounge chairs. His chairs, which are newly constructed and well designed, feature strips of fabric that stretch randomly across the furniture and appear as if they were made of duct tape. In other words, the furniture, just as his cups, plates, bowls, and teapots, look like mistakes or look distressed. The “Seconds” collection takes this idea of mistake to a new level. Each piece of china is mismatched. To take things a bit further, each piece of tableware has randomly placed designs that are juxtaposed in curious ways. This concept would baffle grandma, but if you were wanting to leave a fine set of plates, tea pots and all other forms of fine china to you grandchildren, then this set would be one of the most unique. Here are a number of pieces that I found striking available at Design Public:

Of course, my city by the bay, San Francisco, has not made the initial collection which is not doing much for me. But outside of personal prejudices, this simple wall art is striking, fun, thoughtful typographical mastery. For instance, Los Angeles, shown here, looks as if it were a fruit tree propped up by the trunk of an "L". Granada designs have been successful of evoking the spirit of the city in their manipulations of a simple font. Impressive.
