I decided to put a lot of picture of this bike on the site because bicycles are an interesting beast. Often times, I look at bikes from far away and think they’re ugly, and when I get close up they become beautiful. The Aeroblade for Koga Miyata is definitely one of the bikes that benefits from detail shots. Take a look at this bike. Each bike is hand built for the owner, and signed and numbered which is attached to a special plate. The rims are aluminum glass fiber carbon coated composite which makes these components unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The bike also has crazy gadgets as the Rohloff concield gear shifting. With all this cool stuff, the price isn’t cheap. It comes to $16,000 for one of these bikes which means it’s a real commitment.

Description: Ever since I visited the island of Murano outside of Venice, where they make some of the finest (and cheesiest) glass in the world, I’ve had an obsessions with fine glass objects. This log centerpiece by Jeff Zimmerman is one of the finest. I’ve watched comparable glass blowers work, and for a piece to reach the level of perfection that these logs have acheived is a real accomplishment. I’m assuming there probably was a lot of broken glass on the floor after this run. I also mention the piece because it continues this establishing trend of recreating natural objects, such as logs and antlers and the like, in materials that have to be highly manipulated to acheive the form of the natural object.

Stuart Haygarth’s Chandeliers are as powerful to me as any of the environmental artist, Andy Goldsworthy. Goldsworthy makes simple forms from natural material that, often times, have arrived on the shores of our beaches. Stuart Haygarth uses the UN-natural material that arrives on our beaches. And he turns them into lamps with an indescribable luminosity. This work, the Tide Chandelier, brings recycling art to a higher level by making cycles of cycles.

This purse is a cast clear acrylic body with an 18K gold cut of meat floating in the center. Why? It’s a literal translation of the euphamism: “meatbag” which means a scrotum… I think.

The designers have update the technology(for instance, tape player to DVD player) but maintained the beauty of the original design. Fantastic!

This week marks the annual Millionaire Fair, this year held in Moscow: home to 60,000 Millionaires and 30 Billionaires (The highest concentration in the world). All week, I will be reporting finds from the Fair on more obscure companies that cater to the super rich. What categories of design are on the lists of the fabulously wealthy?

HENK is absolutely one of the most beautiful rich people’s items I have ever seen. It’s incredbily customizable, richly detailed, superbly functional. Everything is perfection of this suitcase. I really find it to be a work of art more than a suitcase. And at about 20,000 dollars for this suitcase, you may not want to use it all the time. I command you to go to the HENK website to see all of the options this suitcase has. You will not believe it!

Description: Martin Margiela’s house of designers are packed with a level of virtuosity that is almost unheard of. I’ve included two images of repurposed garments but the most impressive is the glove jacket. It takes 103 hours to construct this jacket, and the gloves are unstitched and restitched to work together like puzzle pieces but still retain their personality as a glove. Amazing.
