I saw this at Yatzer, and I really appreciated the above piece for where it brought my imagination. The piece by metal garden furniture DeCastelli is not meant to be a dining table, I don’t think. I think it’s meant as pure vision of landscape on a miniature scale. But it occurred to me that this design could make a perfect dining experience. The mountains and the forest represented in this work could bring new rituals and new sensations to a dining experience. For instance, the plant could be a fragrant herb used to complement the food’s flavors. The mountains could be perfect vessels to cook Indian breads or simply to remind the eater where their food comes from. Maybe new forms of dining tables could arise based on the way their structures interact with the cuisine presented to them.

I really don’t think anyone goes out looking for a clock anymore. So, to realy differentiate yourself in the time telling business you have to make something like qlocktwo. it uses this weird letter matrix to spell out the time in five minute intervals. And it does this at the low price of twelve hundred dollars. I can’t shake the feeling that, although quite beautiful, the clock is not novel enough or well crafted enough to warrant the cost. of course, i can be swayed by a good arguement.

“Weltevree is a Dutch product label. Weltevree develops and produces authentic products for the living environment. Appliances that satisfy our primary desires: distinctive, original and of excellent quality. Weltevree was born out of the need to make these products accessible to all.”

That’s their hook. My hook is yet another masterful design studio with a strong grasp of the mashup. Included are two mashups: one a wheelbarrow with a bench, one axe handles with a side chair. Both products are expertly made, but my affinity is for the wheelbarrow bench simply for its ease of use. I sometimes have outdoor parties where furniture is always being moved. This piece, of course will save my back… elegantly.

I’ve also included an image of a modular stair system that is so simple that I want to install one in my own house even though I don’t have a second floor. The beauty of this design is its flexible system. You can get a stair to work for any space, and you don’t have to woory about a perfect fit because the adjustable legs will always get the fit perfect. I will say that in the U.S. don’t let building inspectors see you install this thing. Otherwise, go for it.

Illusion Table is so expertly performed that I couldn’t quite geta handle on its expertly crafted form. First, it is made from laquered ash which is not what I thought. At first glance, it’s steel or aluminum or anything else but wood. But this illusive use of such a simple material is not where the illusion table gets its name. It gets its name from what the table looks like in plan. In plan, it takes on the form of a perfect square not the sloping curve of it’s side profile. This is quite a slick, thoughtful piece.

OOOMS is a guy/girl design duo based in the Netherlands. Their work has a sort of random quality that has a bit of natural bent.

The solar birdhouse is a recent product that creates a beacon for the garden at night without using any grid power to do so. I think it may scare the crap out of birds, though.

The form is very Wabi Sabi, or is it Feng Shui? Whatever Asian influenced adjective that describes a beautifully formed “natural” object that has been co-opted into a new technology. It brings tranquility to your desktop.

I once had an older relative that was obsessed with her blue tinted Delft china. She had hundreds of pieces of every shape and form. Sadly, she died before she ever got to sample the most erotic of Dutch ceramic: the dildo. This piece by OOOMS design was commisioned by the Dutch souvenir project and would surely add excitement as a Christmas stocking stuffer.

Rocker is a project by OOOMS that creates an inexpensive solution to bring new meaning to your old chair. It’s almost like recycling, but it’s more like… Pre-cycling! In other words do throw away that old seat when you can repurpose it as a rocker in a few short twists of this elegant invention.

Probably my favorite piece is The white Origami Chair shown as the second to last image. This chair is designed by So Takahashi and is a made of plate and bar steel with a beautiful white powder coat finish. Another clever design is the Subconscious Effect of Daylight table with light, designed by Daniel Rybakken. This table creates its own shadow sans daylight.

I’m going to give away secrets: The way to find the freshest stuff on earth is to always be checking out the design schools the world over. Beckmans is one of the best. Below is some student work from the recent Stockholm Furniture Fair. Both items are furniture finished in white. One piece is a bit more narrative of its function while the other (the table) conceils its true capabilities. Neither design is particularly innovative, however their craft and constraint holds a place in my heart.

The work of Tomas Gabzdil Libertiny, a Slovakian-born designer based in the Netherlands, can best be described as obsessive-compulsive. But this complete devotion to his craft also leads to his profound and moving design experiments. As an example, he has recently created a Bic stained cabinet which gets its hue from collecting hundreds of Bic pens, breaking them open, and harvesting all of the ink to cover his cabinet. The result is a cabinet with a durable, dreamlike blue hue. He has also created a writing table whose top is built from twenty-two thousand strips of paper turned on end to create a soft and plyable writing surface. It’s sort of like a writing on the side of a four foot thick book.
