I saw this at Yatzer, and I really appreciated the above piece for where it brought my imagination. The piece by metal garden furniture DeCastelli is not meant to be a dining table, I don’t think. I think it’s meant as pure vision of landscape on a miniature scale. But it occurred to me that this design could make a perfect dining experience. The mountains and the forest represented in this work could bring new rituals and new sensations to a dining experience. For instance, the plant could be a fragrant herb used to complement the food’s flavors. The mountains could be perfect vessels to cook Indian breads or simply to remind the eater where their food comes from. Maybe new forms of dining tables could arise based on the way their structures interact with the cuisine presented to them.

I really don’t think anyone goes out looking for a clock anymore. So, to realy differentiate yourself in the time telling business you have to make something like qlocktwo. it uses this weird letter matrix to spell out the time in five minute intervals. And it does this at the low price of twelve hundred dollars. I can’t shake the feeling that, although quite beautiful, the clock is not novel enough or well crafted enough to warrant the cost. of course, i can be swayed by a good arguement.

The Puma Store is an inspiration to all architects out there with lots of time and energy and access to a supply of old shipping containers. I consider this store to be a sort of dialogue with some of the past stores Ive seen where the designers have stacked 6 units high by one wide. This one answers the gravity challenge by creating a massive cantilever with no visible support. How’d they do that? Look back at some of Rem Koolhaas’ earlier works to remind yourself ho.

Clearly a better sink trap design – Core77.

“Another Sign that the Construction Industry is Behind the Times” was my original article name, but it was a bit too long. Why would I say this? As an architect who has spent a great deal of time in the field trying to save my client money, I see construction DUH! moments all the time. Another duh moment is when I saw this invention recently at Core 77. This invention above which is a clear sink trap that will never clog and will always let you know where that lost ring went is a sign that for years a simple solution to a major problem awaited. This new invetion will save homeowners millions over the years for a very small initial cost today.

Out at architecture sites, I see this on a daily basis and wonder why more contractors are not entrepreneurs when they see how much time they waste doing certain tedious jobs. Take interior painting for instance. I’ve worked on architecture projects where every single corner of a room is taped with plastic just to paint the frames of the doors. This whole process must have taken hours to tape not to mention all of this plastic will be tossed in the garbage. How about a frame to contain overspray? How about more pre-painting? Seriously, there are thousands of inventions just awaiting the designer’s eye out onthe construction site. IDEO, if you’re out there, I know Medical devices are lucrative, but all aspects of the construction industry are in need of a serious overhaul. Help!

Illusion Table is so expertly performed that I couldn’t quite geta handle on its expertly crafted form. First, it is made from laquered ash which is not what I thought. At first glance, it’s steel or aluminum or anything else but wood. But this illusive use of such a simple material is not where the illusion table gets its name. It gets its name from what the table looks like in plan. In plan, it takes on the form of a perfect square not the sloping curve of it’s side profile. This is quite a slick, thoughtful piece.
