"Søren Ulrik Petersen trained as a cabinetmaker at Wulff’s Møbelsnedkeri in Hellerup in 1985. He then went on to study at Danmarks Designskole, where he graduated as a cabinetmaker in 1990. He has a highly functional approach to his creative work, and his products are meant to create a special closeness between people. One example of a piece designed to these specifications is his STICK IN A BOX, a multi-tool for domestic use. Petersen is a designer who continues the Danish tradition for furniture and design and manages to mix art and crafts with a great feel for materials. One example is his dinnerware Essence, produced by Royal Copenhagen, currently in use at the MoMA restaurants in New York. Other examples are his furniture series produced by PP Møbler and the cradle Swing Low, made from pure wool felt, ropes and hemp, which has been available through Danish Crafts in recent years. His beautiful and innovative work earned Petersen a three-year working grant from the Danish Arts Foundation in 2000. "
