The Illoiha Climbing Gym Explores the Childlike Joy of Climbing Over Fine Furniture
by Brandon Thomas Baunach
The Illoiha spa and Gym in Tokyo explores a number of fun and interesting concepts in pampering and working out, not the least of which is this climbing gym. This climbing space designed by Nendo Akihiro is made of a number of baroque pieces of furniture, mantles, and picture frames built to a high durability and painted white. The sensation imbibes a childlike and somewhat Dali-esque vision of climbing. Participants are encourage to grab, tug, and struggle their way up the sides of this furniture until they reach the top. And your prize for getting to the top? Knowing that you’ve left your mark on what may someday be a piece of priceless contemporary art.
