I’ve featured Clement Eloy tons of times on this blog. I’ve never met him or even spoken to him, but I like his design cleverness. He’s always looking for an edge to something such as his laptop power source / foot warmers or his hot doll (don’t ask, just look). Yet another edgy, smart design is what he calls the Lucifer Match Striker. The design is in a clear and black bullet shaped case with a hole in the top. Whenever you need a match, you can just turn this mechanism over, give it a tap, and pull out the match. The sides of the mechanism have a size calibrated to the head of the match, so when the match is pulled out, the rough sides of the Lucifer Match Striker ignite the flame.
It really is simple, beautiful, and creates this elegant motion for lighting a match. I can’t say that I’m 100% convinced of the design, though. The one thing that I worry about, which may or may not be a design flaw, is the lazy match striker or the abnormally shaped match. Could the match get caught in the head of the mechanism? If so, it would ignite all the matches at once and become a serious fire hazzard or an injury waiting to happen.
Finally (and this just occurred to me) judging by the themes of Mr. Eloy’s designs, I would not be surprised if this design was meant to be somewhat sexual. In his renderings, the Lucifer Match Striker looks a bit like the head of a man’s penis with the match flame shooting out of it like Lucifer’s man-seed. Maybe I’m thinking to much into this one, but I urge you to check out his previous projects to see where his mind goes before you call me weird.
