The School provides shared state-of-the-art offsite and onsite studios to give students access to the technologies and techniques that are vital for creative practice in art and design. Individual workspaces are provided for two semesters to each undergraduate student taking an Integrative Projects course and each graduate student is provided a large studio for six semesters of their MFA program.
In addition, students have access to a wealth of resources across the entire University campus, including the James Duderstadt Center that
includes well-equipped electronic media labs, computer labs, and a library housing an extensive collection of books on art and design.
The School of Art & Design faculty studios are situated in a newly renovated 14,000 sq.ft. factory space along Ann Arbor’s expanding North Main Street corridor. Approximately one mile from the Art & Architecture building, the site is close to city services and Central campus, yet also directly adjacent to the Huron River and a metro park.
Studios provide an average of 300 sq. ft. of space for each tenure and tenure-track faculty member at the School, as well as visiting artists. Most studios feature operable windows, ample natural light, and high ceilings for large-scale work. An expansive centrally located common space on the first floor provides additional opportunities for collaboration, informal exhibition, and socializing. The facility also includes a communal tool shop, a kitchen and a freight door to facilitate transporting work.
