Piet Hein Eek is not just a noise you make when you’re choking. It’s also a very adept design firm in the Netherlands. I chose this chair to be on design crack because it transported me to another time. Grade school, in fact, is where this chair took me. It’s hard to put my finger on, but it seems that the shape, proportion, and hardness of this chair is essentially the same as elementary school chairs in Texas. They even seem to be made out of the same aluminum-linoleum combination. Although I loved my school chairs, they definitely did not have the thinness or the finely detailed corners that Eek’s work exhibits. Eek’s work is also extremely light compared to the weighty chairs I grew up with. It seems that the only category that my beloved school chairs win out is price. This chair is $600 where I only assume an equal school chair would be much less.
