The website for Bretz Sofas is www.mycultsofa.com, and, quite honestly, you would probably need to be in a cult to own one of these pieces of furniture. Because only someone who has been brainwashed would pay thousands of dollars to buy a Bretz Sofa. They are truly the ugliest sofas I have ever seen, and I challenge each of you to show me an uglier sofa. When a company makes something this ugly, I need an explanation, so I went for a read of their mission statement:
BRETZ Couture aspires to capture the soul of haute couture of the international catwalks and bring it to your home. With a wealth of facets which make dreams reality. Be swept away by the joy of intoxicating colours and shapes. Experience warmth and comfort; stylishness and high quality. Enjoy the glamour of BRETZ Couture with all your senses because: Bretz: Design is born in the heart. For the heart.
I’ve been following couture fashion for a while now, and I’m thinking to myself, when did the scary prostitute look come in to vogue? I don’t see these sofas following the likes of Valentino or Prada. I’ve even had a cursory look at what I thought might be their clothing counterpart, Frederick’s of Hollywood, and even this brand has managed to refine their look well beyond a Tim Burton Film. Still give credit where it’s due. The sofa is an achievement of some sorts, and I commend the company for sticking to their vision no matter how ugly that vision may be.

Prada ? No. Dolce&Gabbana - maybe, Versace - yes, Cavalli - SURE yes ! Ever heard of those “couture fashions” ? ))
Want to see some REAL UGLY furniture ? Go visit some traditional oak furniture store somewhere in Midwest !

Yeah, well the traditional oak furniture is completely bland and lifeless. The Bretz sofa has a soul at least, unlike all the boring old “Sofa Center” sofas. It’s just that its soul seems to actively strive for ugly.

You are so very very wrong! If you ridiculise Bretz this way, a proper long reaction is needed.
To start with, take a proper look at the Bretz website and see a few more models than those you have picked. Look at the Marilyn, Slow Rider, Hookipa and Mammut Models. Bretz is a breath of fresh air, it is the answer to all cold and soulless minimalist offerings, which all look the same anyway. It is the answer to the seriousness and lifelessness of other high end manufacturers (perhaps apart from upper end manufacturer Edra, which you don’t even seem to know. If you tear apart Bretz, what would you do with Edra then?).
Bretz sofa’s are daring, compelling, opulent, refreshing, eclectic, glamourous, unique and sublime. They are not only a pleasure to the eye, but they are extremely comfortable to sit in. They are high end sofa’s made in Germany, i.e. they have a reputation of quality and durability, with a global, urban chic appeal to the young and happy. Bretz offers over 300 different fabrics, which almost equals a personalised made-to-order sofa.
No I don’t represent Bretz. I am merely a high end couture design aficionado which travels an awful lot. I have to laugh at the way you speak about my favourite sofa, especially when the ridiculising comes from a minimalist corner… Minimalism is passe, it is out and dead. Minimalism tries to be art for art’s sake, it has lost all soul. Drama, self expression, passion and fusion are the new trend. I thought you would know that, being a designer? Take a look at what famous interior designers such as Andrew Martin say, show and produce these days: minimalism is being replaced by a much glossier look! Take a look at the best designer events in the world such as Maison et Objects in Paris, IMM in Cologne, Ambiente in Frankfurt and several Italian events to see what is going on…
Come and take a look across Europe in the most trendy and upmarket art galleries, the most trendy lounge bars and clubs in Paris, Berlin, Milan, you will find Bretz sofa’s in the most selective and stylish venues. I am not talking about what you call “cheap prostitute” venues (a bit sad you went down that route), but uber upscale venues such as Bangaluu in Berlin or Fitzcarraldo in Milan. I haven’t even mentioned TV, theatre, fashion and music productions. Do some research and you will even find cirque du soleil using Bretz…
Also, I would expect you -being an architect- to know the Stilwerk Stores in Germany’s megapoles? Stilwerk (architectural masterpieces in their own right) are design and lifestyle only malls, housing the best and most special international brands. If you are not amongst the best, most original, you will not have the slightest chance to offer your products there. Bretz happens to have prominent outlets in every Stilwerk. Walk around in trendy Paris, and you will find Bretz in Galeries Lafayette.
Also, you will definitely have offended the gay community, who are great admirers of the Bretz brand. Not the best thing to do if you are located in Frisco…
Anyway, I appreciated you have given me the opportunity to react.

While looking for the Bretz website i found this post. having owned a Bretz sofa for years, i can only disagree with you, and a Parisian abroad i am often complimented on my good taste so as we say “les goûts et les couleurs ne se discutent pas”. not only the Bretz sofas are stylish in a original sort of way, they are also very comfortable. everyone that comes to my place loves it. i call it the Monster but it’s a term of endearment :- )
PS: i am not gay

If you create a new design and everyone like it you don’t have your own handwriting/stype!
Think about it.
