The work of Pieke Bergmans, a young Dutch designer, can best be described as organic. I here that term in the design world all the time, but I still quite don’t know what it means. So, here’s what it means to me: her version of organic is expressed in two different ways. First, Pieke’s works often take shape by allowing the natural tendency of whatever material she’s using to express itself. An example is her work: Crystal Virus. In this piece, the molten glass is allowed to take shape of whatever the adjacent object happens to be, and the glass is lead to its form by gravity. Second, Pieke’s works often mimic nature in form, which feels like a different type of organic. This is the case with her beautiful plateware set called Eggshells. Eggshells is made up of two items. One is a bowl, and one is a plate. Both derive their form from the curve of an eggshell. And that’s about as simple as you get. What I like about this piece, though, is it reminds us of the beauty and stability of such a simple organic structure as an eggshell. It asks what does an eggshell do well, and what can I transform the eggshell into that will make it do well for me?
