I was Reading Matti Klenell’s impression of her own creation, the Four Flower Vase, and I was thinking that her impression did not do much for me to describe the beauty of this piece. She said something like glass has two great characteristics: transparency and seductiveness, and that she played on those themes. Hmm… If the text were honest it might say something like this: “I had a vague idea of what I wanted to do drawn from thousands of sources that enter my head each day, and I filtered these down to this object after painstakingly considering several prototypes.” In other words, this is vase is a game of aesthetic chance and influenced by Matti’s world. I guess what I’m getting at is written language can’t really express a poetic object. The object should just do that for itself… Wait, that would put me out of a job. Anyway, I function as a speculator or generator of metaphors when it comes to describing the design work of others. In that framework, I can’t help but think of this piece as an over-sized olive stuck in a shot glass.
