Tom Dixon is sort of the Keith Richards of the London design scene. He’s a man who just did what he did. He was an experimenter and tinkerer with no overtly huge ambition to take over the design world. Yet, despite his early laissez faire attitude, he emerged as a design rock star. He even had a couple of dramatic rock star moments in the form of successive motorcycle crashes. However, unlike Keith Richards, Tom Dixon continues to innovate within his craft.
One of my favorite pieces of Mr. Dixon’s of recent is the Spin Candelabra. It’s a heavy, cast iron body that is a bit of an homage to Alexander Calder if Mr. Calder were a 19th century gothic blacksmith. Also, I can’t help but be reminded of a certain music video by The Police. Ah well, I just went back in time there for a second.
