Conto Chair by Julian Mayor

A number of Julian Mayor’s work focuses on the synthetic representation of topography, and this item is no different. What I mean by “synthetic representation of topography” is hard to explain: In architecture school, we were required to make topographic models of the land surrounding our building. We could form and sculpt the land however we desired, but we usually built representational models of the land by creating thin layers and building them up, side by side, to create the whole landscape rather than carving out the landscape from a solid mass of clay, for instance. His work certainly follows this pattern.
The conto chair, in particular, appears as if a dozen tiny wires popped out of the ground and sinuously left a trail of their remains before they popped back down into the ground again leaving an object that you can sit in. I quite like it.
