Description: Last week was the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. I, unfortunately, am too poor to go to any international design events this winter, so I’ll feature a few of the designers that have been featured in the Dutch Design Week in recent years.
CULTIVATE is a design house that, as many Dutch designers do, explore the extreme edges of puns. They are very toung and cheek with their designs. Their playfulness does not detratct from the visceral power that their objects produce. The Therese chandelier, in particular is one of these visceral items. The designers have thrown out the paradigm of crystal, and concentrated on the two dimensional silhouette of a chandelier as the basis of the chandelier design. Modern acrylic replaces crystal, however the effect is equally or more clear in its function to dazzle.
