Danish Crafts Collection: Povl Kjær
"Kjær trained at Kunsthåndværkerskolen I Kolding from 1974-76 and at Århus Kunstakademi from 1976-78. In 1981 he completed his training as a wood-carver and since then he has worked within most areas of his field on assignments like ornamentation, figures, models, reconstructions and restorations. Povl Kjær mainly works in wood and often accepts commissions from museums, exhibitions and companies. He has created exhibition mannequins for the Carlsberg Breweries and a sculpture of Hans Christian Andersen for his house in Odense as well as wooden figures to illustrate the fairytales. Furthermore, Kjær has worked with Lego and designed a series of knives for the restaurant chain A Hereford Beefstouw. Form plays a central part in his production of knives and must be able to at once submit to and challenge the demands of hand and eye. Povl Kjær’s work is rooted in Nordic culture and nature and his materials are carefully selected according to high-quality standards."
